Postdoctoral Fellows

There are openings in the lab for postdoctoral fellows
with experience in cancer biology who are interested in studying cancer stem cells.  Applicants should have a Ph.D. in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry or in a related field and have a strong publication record.
The successful candidate should be able to manage multiple detail-oriented tasks with minimal supervision, capable of trouble-shooting and critical thinking, self-motivated, dedicated and creative.  Interested candidates should submit a cover letter describing research interests and career goals, a CV (including full bibliography), and names and contact information for at least 3 references by e-mail (jkirshne at purdue  dot edu).  At the moment I do not have sufficient funds for full support of a fellow, therefore, interested candidates should apply for external fellowships prior to joining the lab (I will be happy to assist in all stages of the application process).

Graduate Students

The lab is currently looking for graduate students interested in studying cancer initiation (cancer stem cells), prevention, and treatment (novel strategies to block differentiation and to eliminate cancer stem cells).  Please contact me if you are interested in doing a rotation in the lab (NOTE:  you must first be admitted for graduate studies at Purdue).

Undergraduate Students

Interested students should contact me with a short description of your research interests and career goals.  Please include the following elements in your description: 1) a paragraph describing what you expect to learn from this research opportunity (both technical and conceptual), 2) a paragraph talking about previous experience preparing you for working in a lab (both coursework and outside experience), 3)  your other time commitments demonstrating that you will have sufficient time for a research project.  Due to the nature of my projects you need to be able to spend approximatelly 3 hours per day, 3 days per week on research, and I expect that upon mutual agreement you will ultimately proceed to
conduct a thesis research project.  Students who only want to do research for a single semester should explicitly indicate that they are not interested in pursuing a research thesis.  Please put some thought into the type of project you would like to participate in; it will help me to design a project that will fit your interests.  At the end of each semester you will need to submit a manuscript style report describing the data collected during the semester.  The report should include an introduction, materials and methods, results, and a short discussion.  This will help me to evaluate your progress and assign a grade for the course.
